Optimising your classic bicycle's seating: attention to technical detail

A vintage bicycle's seating setup, comprising the saddle and seatpost, determines not only rider comfort but also the historical authenticity of the build. Whether you are restoring an Italian road racing bike with Columbus tubing or an authentic 1970s French touring bike, the choice of components must meet the strict dimensional standards of each era.

Fitment criteria: diameters, threads, and materials

Seatposts: precision to the tenth of a millimetre

Unlike modern standards, vintage steel frames (Reynolds 531, Vitus 971, Carbolite 103) require seatposts with extremely precise diameters. An error of just 0.2 mm can cause irreparable damage to your frame's seat tube. Our period-correct parts cover the main historical standards:

  • 25.0 mm diameter: Classic French standard, typical of 1970s Peugeot and Motobécane frames.
  • 26.2 mm to 26.6 mm diameters: Commonly used on mid-range tubing or intermediate Italian builds.
  • 26.8 mm and 27.2 mm diameters: Professional reference standards for high-end Reynolds and Columbus tubing with larger internal diameters.

Period-correct saddles: leather ergonomics and steel rails

Leather saddles (Idéale, Brooks) and rigid plastic or suede racing models (San Marco Concor, Selle Italia Turbo) require compatible saddle clamps. For long distances on a touring bike or for historic events like L'Eroica, the leather tension and the condition of the steel rails must be perfect to guarantee the structural safety of the seating setup.

Authenticity and quality control of our second-hand seating components
